Skirv's Projects

These are the projects that I work on; most of them revolve around Usenet in some way, but there are definitely exceptions.

Battletech
Reference and data sheets for playing Battletech.

Cane Toads
For much of my life, I have been fascinated by Cane Toads, a species of toad from Hawaii that was introduced to Australia in the 1930s, and is currently acting like a plague on the country. This page attempts to consolidate the information I have on the toads.

Linux Clusters
At work I work extensively with building and maintaining Linux clusters. These documents may help others in doing the same.

cmi.* Archives
These archives of the cmi.* Usenet hierarchy go back to at least the year 2000, and are searchable both by search engine and through a news-like web interface.

Usenet FAQs
These FAQs mostly concern topics related to Usenet Administration, but also include various mirrored documents and a few more amusing works.

Usenet Moderation
I moderate a variety of Usenet newsgroups, on topics ranging from Usenet administration to games about giant robots.

Neal Stephenson Archives
A collection of Neal Stephenson's work, from the stories that he has released on-line to links to his actual for-sale work.

Usenet NoCeM Messages
I've decided to start putting some effort into taking advantage of the mostly-defunct NoCeM project to replace my personal need for cancel messages. This is what I've got so far. No, it's probably not interesting to anybody but Usenet geeks.

PGPMoose

pgpmoose is a standard by which all valid messages in a moderated Usenet newsgroup are signed with a specific PGP/GPG key. All messages that appear in the group without that valid pgpmoose key are therefore invalid and assumed to be forged, and should be automatically removed from the newsgroup.

Uber-Config
I use a lot of Unix systems in my life, for personal business and for work. One of the major problems I've had with doing this is dealing with the small differences between platforms and networks, and just keeping my configurations consistent between them. The uber-config is my attempt to have one set of configuration files and use them everywhere.

Usenet @ UIUC
Usenet @ UIUC is an organization dedicitating to preserving Usenet on the UIUC campus. Our server, news.ks.uiuc.edu, came up on October 25th, two days before the old campus news server was reti red.

Usenet -> Web
I maintain a news-web gateway for the groups that I moderate, as well as a few others of more public interest.

Usenet Volunteer Moderators
This group is meant to mirror the Usenet Volunteer Votetakers, but works on moderating groups instead of voting on them. It doesn't really exist, but it should.

Spirit of Christmas
Back in 1996, I was the first to put The Spirit of Christmas - arguably the pilot for South Park - on the web and distribute it widely. I'm still doing it.
