allen19

allen19 is my baby. From when I started hanging out there in 1996 until I moved out of the dorms in 1999, it was the center of my social life; now that I'm well-and-truly out, it's still the center of a mailing list of my best friends.

This page is a bit more collaborative than most. There are a lot of stories to be told, and they will be told...

Overview

Allen19 is room 19 in Allen Hall, and is commonly referred to as the Ground South Quad. It is the largest dorm room on the UIUC campus, though only by 2.5 bricks. Four residents live there at a time, ideally; even with that many people, there's usually room for huge amounts of junk, ranging from large metal boxes to couches and entertainment centers. It's generally been the social center of Ground South. When it became a guy's floor, the room was taken over by me and my friends. Great things happened there during my time.

Year Zero: 1995-1996

Pre-History

When I came to Allen Hall in 1995, Ground South was a girl's floor, and Three South (3S; I'm going to abbreviate from here on in) was for guys. This didn't mean much to me at the time, seeing as I was isolated on 2N and just learning how to be social; my only real contact with either floor was through Jesse, who lived in 315. If I'd been paying attention, though, I would have heard the stories of rooms defecting, residents picking up and shaking desk clerks doing rounds, and other varied stories of oddness. Instead, I chose to live on 4N the next year, as 3S and GS switched places and the legend began.

Year One: 1996-1997

Foundation and Sloth

The original residents of the Quad were supposed to be Calvin, Ray, Jesse, and Justin. Calvin failed out before making it to the Quad, and was replaced by Brian, a random engineering senior that just needed a place to stay; while this had obviously turned out fairly well, the need for a replacement spoke prophetically of things to come.

I was still living on 4N, with the Geeks, when Allen19 began to form itself. It started as people began to flock around Justin, who looked scary and always had a bat named Figaro with him but who was also a really friendly guy. Then, as the the Eva Gang started taking over the commons, more people came flocking to Justin and his friends. I joined both groups - they were both friendly, and besides, I was hanging out in the Quad anyway to visit Jesse...

Second semester, Calvin returned as Brian left. Suddenly, Allen19 had a strong, charismatic leader who preached the ways of Dandy Donuts (once Dunkin' Donuts), late-night hockey, and movies from the Urbana Free Library. And people started failing out as a result, in droves... But more people came just the same.

Justin left the Quad to move to a house at the end of the 96-97 school year, and Jesse left to join the Marines. Ray and Calvin asked me to take one of the places. I agreed quickly.

Year Two: 1997-1998

My first year in the Quad did not involve Calvin, as originally planned; he was one of the Fallen, having not made it through his return semester. In his place we got the Unchosen Two, Dante, a Mexican transfer student who didn't know what he was getting into. My other roommates were Ray, now the oldest member of the Quad, and Dave, a nice Hawaiian guy that I kindof knew.
