Anonymous Harassment, Mar 2003

In March 2003, I have been subject to a series of anonymous e-mails, phone calls, and posts to my personal electronic journal regarding an entry in the Killfile Dungeon. This is my log of this harassment.

• 22 Feb 2003
  • Received a forged e-mail to my work address from 'YourMammy@uiuc.edu'. I ignored the message as a forgery.
• 02 Mar 2003
  • 12:22pm - Received an anonymous instant message from the AIM alias 'jcabambenek'. Warned and blocked the user when I returned at 2:16pm.
  • An anonymous post appears in my livejournal.
• 10 Mar 2003
  • Additional anonymous instant messages from 'JCAB1469' (16:14, at work), 'nivrikst1' (16:21, at work), 'nivrikst2' (16:21, at work), and 'linkyFigure1' (22:49, at home) All of these users were warned and blocked.
  • Forged e-mail from 'jlindqui@figure1.net', which is an address of my friend Jason. Jason did not send the mail, however; the sender appears to have chosen the address so that it would get around my email filters.
  • There are twelve anonymous livejournal posts to my livejournal, eleven of which seem to be from the same person as before.
• 11 Mar 2003
  • Another anonymous instant message, this time from 'NikandKile'. Also received an e-mail from AOL indicating that my email address was actually used to create the account.
  • 2:58pm - received an unforged e-mail to have John B*mbenek's name and email removed from his Dungeon entry. It was caught by my email filters, and I just found it today (20 Mar 2003).
  • Approx. 4pm - I write this note, and mailed it certified mail to John's home address the following day.
  • Sixteen more anonymous livejournal posts, fifteen of which appear to be from the same anonymous person.
• 12 Mar 2003 - six more anonymous livejournal posts, five of which are from the above poster.
• 13 Mar 2003
  • Approx 3pm - I remove John's @uiuc.edu address from his web page. I leave on a historical address for reference.
  • Three more anonymous posts, only one of which appears to be from the original person.
• 14 Mar 2003 - two more anonymous posts, both from the original person.
• 15 Mar 2003 - one more anonymous post, which does not appear to be from the original person.
• 17 Mar 2003 - three more anonymous posts, from the original person.
• 18 Mar 2003, 12am - I start screening anonymous posts to my journal, so they won't appear publicly.
• 20 Mar 2003
  • 2:27pm - get an email from my upstream provider accusing my of DMCA violations at www.killfile.org/why/bambenek.html for "copywritten emails, email address, and name" and threatening Mcleod with the DMCA. Major problems with this complaint:
    • The requested web page doesn't exist.
    • You can't copywrite an email address or name.
    • I still don't know what materials are being referred to.
  • 3pm - start writing this web page, and update the Dungeon to not
• 21 Mar 2003 - Sid responds to the accusatons of DMCA violation.

I'm sorry that some of the emails on this page are not available for public use; I have them archived but don't want to publish the non-anonymous messages, except where expressly allowed.
